Merit and Capitalism

PERKASA, an non-governmental organization was founded and established after the March 2008 general elections when the ruling coalition, BN lost its 2/3 majority in the House. It's sole purpose is to champion the rights of Malays of which they feel are being challenged by the non-Malays.

Ibrahim Ali the founder of PERKASA, claimed today that Bumiputeras should rightly own 67% (55% Malay + 12% others made up the total population of Bumis) of the nation's wealth compared to the 30% that was part of the economic equity in the New Economic Policy.

For the record, I have no qualms with the purpose of PERKASA and I sincerely do not think there is anything wrong with defending Malay rights.

But what is Malay rights?

Is Malay rights, the right for Malays to pray in the Mosque? Is Malay rights, the right for a Malay child to obtain proper education? Is Malay rights, the right for Malay to enjoy a pack of good nasi lemak everyday? If this is it, I honestly think all Malaysians will fight for this, we do not even need PERKASA.

I believe many Malaysians do not view our country with any racial divide any longer. We fight for each other, not only for the Malays. We strive for the same objectives, for the betterment of all Malaysians.

Why do we need to divide our economic pie based on the racial percentage of our population? I think the idea of 30% in NEP is flawed, let alone the 67% Ibrahim Ali is talking about. Have we not move forward from the age of feudalism towards a modernize Malaysia? What happened to the merit system where those who work hard gets more, those who just sit on the couch gets none?

Perhaps PERKASA should propose that we stop practicing capitalism and move towards socialist state?
